JUANITA LAKE, Calif. - This last weekend people found themselves asking what there is to do for Father's day? While staying in town, having a BBQ with friends and family, or making cards for their beloved fathers tends to be a perfect tradition, there were a few outdoor activities available in the outer skirts of town.

One event that happens, is located near Macdoel, Calif., the annual youth fishing derby at Juanita Lake.

Eight years running, the Butte Valley Chamber of Commerce has teamed up with U.S. Fish and Wildlife, California Fish and Game, CAL FIRE, U.S. Forest Service, and various sporting shops in Klamath Falls, Ore. to create an exciting experience for the whole family.

All kids, ages 15 and under are able to register. Their biggest event brought in 150 kids.

“The dream was inspired by Danny Vanderboegh, Butte Valley Fire Chief, and his wife Wilda who love to fish,” said Bobbilee Sisson, fundraiser coordinator, and registrar. “They wanted to create a place for kids to get out, get excited about nature, and not be stuck in the house and the Butte Valley Chamber of Commerce backed them on it. People can fish with their families, have a good time, and it's all free.”

The young anglers spend a beautiful Saturday fishing for the longest trout casting their poles off the shoreline of the freshly stocked lake in hopes to win one of the various prizes. Registration began at 8:30 AM and the fish were submitted by 11:30 AM for measuring and weigh-in.

Food and drinks were provided. While waiting for the announcement of the winners, Smokey the Bear also made an appearance greeting excited kids as they run up for a high five and a picture. Firefighters sprayed water out of an engine hose. Allowing the gathered children to help hold it and spray a geyser out into the lake.

Volunteers are welcome, needed, and encouraged for future fishing derbies. If this sounds like something you would love to help with please contact Bobbilee at Bobbi_Sisson@fws.gov, or call her at 760-616-5457.
