Klamath local releases Alanis Morissette approved cover song, featuring NIN Producer/Engineer
KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. - At a time when technology now permits almost any aspiring musician to record themselves from home, Klamath Falls local Nick Depew operates differently than many. Having released recorded music since 2001, Depew chooses to work with established music industry veterans to give his songs a professional edge.
Operating under the band moniker “Relevant Discord,” Depew has collaborated with producers/engineers Joe Haze (Sublime, Chuck Mosley), Sylvia Massy (Prince, Tool, Johnny Cash), and Rich Veltrop (Rage Against the Machine). His evocative rock melds singer-songwriter honesty with symphonic and dissonant elements against a backdrop of guitar-driven angst.
On July 28, Depew’s Relevant Discord released a cover of the iconic Alanis Morissette song “Uninvited.” What makes the release noteworthy is Depew brought a number of new elements to the song’s underlying composition, requiring permission directly from the Morissette camp to release. Having started an independent record label upon graduating from college and working as a music business consultant to numerous artists and organizations over the last several years, Depew put those experiences and insights to work to ensure his “Uninvited” derivation could legally see the light of day. Bypassing intermediary agencies and ignoring recommendations to simply release the song and ask for forgiveness later, Depew took his request directly through the corporate publishing labyrinth of Universal Music until his case was submitted to Morissette for formal approval.
Recorded with Haze, and enlisting Nine Inch Nails and Guns N’ Roses producer/engineer, Sean Beavan, for additional instrumentation and mixing, the result is an authorized, ethereal turns primal retelling of the beloved song. Available on all major streaming services, one can choose their preferred option to hear and/or purchase the tune through the Relevant Discord website at: www.relevantdiscord.com.
When he’s not releasing music of his own, Nick is heavily involved in the regional music scene, regularly coaching others how to properly release their material. One of the primary organizers of the Klamath Folk Festival, and a number of the Klamath Folk Alliance’s various programs, Depew has become a business mentor to many Southern Oregon musicians and works extensively to advocate for Klamath Falls as an up-and-coming music community destination.
